Since August 31, 1989, when the Latin graphic writing was (re)adopted, Basarabia (Moldova) celebrates every year the Romanian Language Day, as a national holiday, through a number of cultural events. In Romania the event was manifested in 2006 and 2007, than the project was reloaded in 2011 in 31st of August with great success. The proclamation of the Romanian Language Day, in Romania, still waiting to receive Senate votes in order to become ‘official’.  

The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), through the Romanians Abroad Directorate, in partnership with the Action 2012 Civic Platform, made possible the organization of a number of events meant to celebrate the Romanian Language Day on both Prut River banks. Romanian books where donated during this memorable day to our basarabian brothers and sisters.

Performing pro-bono in University Square and celebrating Romanian Language, in downtown Bucharest at 0 KM, on August 31st2011: Grigore Leşe, Iris, Maria Răducanu, Alexandrina Hristov, Raku, El Negro, Trei Parale, Subcarpati, Nimeni Altu’, Morometzii, Butch&Keri, Bitză, Norzeatic and Eugen Simion.

This double-event went from Chisinau to Bucharest and vice versa with the live transmission sponsored and transmitted by the website www.privesc.eu. Photos made by the author in Bucharest, on 31st of August 2011.

  3. On 6th of December 2011…finally approved!
    Legislative proposal that states the Romanian Language Day will be celebrated every year on 31 August, was approved in the Senate by 102 votes “for” two votes “against” and one abstention, Mediafax.

    The draft law, initiated by 166 congressman from all political groups, provides the Romanian Language Day to be marked by the authorities and public institutions in the country and abroad, by organizing cultural and educational programs and events, evocative or scientific nature, dedicated to Romanian language.
